ATPL(A) Theory Course

The ATPL theoretical course is the gateway to your career as a professional airline pilot. It is a must if you want to pursue your dream of becoming an airline pilot and can be started immediately after your PPL. Today, most airlines require candidates to have the knowledge associated with this course, even if you will be flying as a First Officer. Later in your career you will be awarded the Airline Transport Pilot’s Licence and the ATPL Theoretical is a requirement.

The ATPL theoretical course consists of 650 hours:

  • 10% of this should be with an instructor +10 hours.
  • 65 hours conducted by ATO on Google Meet (Virtual Classroom).
  • 10 hours in a real classroom with physical attendance on 1 day.

The location and date of the physical classroom will be communicated later.

We will provide you with tests and exams to take at home, so that you are fully prepared for the official exam. You still need to complete the mandatory progress tests Completion of the KSA 100 (Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes) course.

Our training organization will issue an official recommendation to begin the theoretical examination process once the requirements have been met.

What are the pre-requirements?

  • An applicant for a PPL shall be at least 17 years of age.
  • ICAO PPL certificate.
  • EASA Medical Class II or Class I certificate.
  • English ICAO Level 4.

What subjects do you need to learn?

The ATPL Theoretical Course covers a total of 13 subjects, knowledge of which is mandatory for a future airline pilot, these are:

  • Air Law
  • Aircraft General Knowledge Airframe, Systems and Powerplant
  • Aircraft General Knowledge Instrumentation
  • Flight Performance and Planning Mass and Balance
  • Flight Performance and Planning Flight Planning and Monitoring
  • Flight Performance and Planning Performance
  • Human Performance and Limitations
  • Meteorology
  • Navigation General Navigation
  • Navigation Radio Navigation (PBN)
  • Operational Procedures
  • Principles of Flight
  • Communications

The course includes the mandatory KSA-100 assessments which are required for the course completion since 2022.

Theory exam

It is important to pass the home exams before the official theory test, which must be taken within 18 months of the date of the first official test. If you score below 75% in any subject, you will have to retake the exam in that subject(s). You have a total of 4 attempts.

We operate an Austro Control approved exam centre, so we know exactly where and how we can support you through the exam, including administrative procedures and preparation.

After completing the ATPL Theoretical Course, you will be awarded with the Course Completion Exam Certificate from the Authority. You may use this certificate to cover the theoretical parts of your SEP IR or CPL training.
